Patna: In a major boost to Bihar’s energy infrastructure, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday laid the foundation stone of the NTPC Nabinagar Super Thermal Power Project (STPP) Stage-II (3×800 MW) in Aurangabad district. The project, worth over Rs 29,948 crore, is set to become the second-largest power plant in Bihar and a cornerstone of NTPC’s nationwide energy portfolio.

The power plant, based on cutting-edge ultra-supercritical technology, is designed to offer the highest level of efficiency in thermal energy generation. Equipped with a dry bottom ash handling system and air-cooled condensers, it will significantly reduce freshwater consumption—an important step toward sustainable energy production in a water-stressed region.

“This is not just a power plant; it’s a symbol of Bihar’s development journey,” said the Prime Minister while addressing the gathering at Bikramganj in Rohtas district. The facility is expected to supply low-cost electricity to Bihar as well as neighbouring states including Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Odisha, West Bengal, and Punjab, supporting both residential needs and industrial expansion.

The new thermal project is part of a broader development package exceeding Rs 48,520 crore that PM Modi launched during his two-day visit to Bihar. It includes infrastructure investments across energy, transport, and urban development sectors.

The NTPC Nabinagar plant will also contribute to India’s long-term energy goals. NTPC, the country’s largest integrated energy company, currently operates more than 80 GW of installed capacity and is developing another 32 GW—13 GW of which is from renewable sources. The firm aims to reach 60 GW of renewable capacity by 2032.

In line with national commitments on climate action and energy transition, NTPC is increasingly integrating clean energy technologies while modernising its thermal infrastructure for better efficiency and reduced environmental impact.

The Nabinagar Stage-II plant is projected to not only boost regional energy security but also catalyse economic development in Bihar’s hinterland. Local communities are expected to benefit from improved power supply, job creation, and ancillary infrastructure development.

As India aims to secure its energy future while ensuring affordability and sustainability, investments like Nabinagar STPP Stage-II highlight the central government’s dual focus on development and environmental responsibility.
