Gopalganj: A historic airport in Bihar is moving closer to resuming operations after years of inactivity. The Sabeya Airport in the Hathua area of Gopalganj district has recently been inspected by a team from the Airports Authority of India (AAI), marking an important step towards its revival. The visit has raised fresh hopes among residents who have long demanded better air connectivity from the region.
The inspection team, which arrived from Delhi, carefully examined the condition of the runway, surrounding land, and existing infrastructure at the site. Officials also held discussions with local administration representatives about the future development plan for the airport. According to authorities, the review was part of a wider process following approval from the Central Government to explore restarting operations at the facility.
The push to reopen the airport has been driven by long-standing local demands. Gopalganj’s Member of Parliament Dr. Alok Kumar Suman had raised the issue in Parliament, highlighting the need to restore air services in the region. The airport has also been included under the Centre’s UDAN scheme, which aims to improve connectivity by linking smaller towns and cities with affordable air travel options.
Spread over around 517 acres, the Sabeya Airport is considered significant not just for civilian use but also from a strategic point of view. Located close to the Nepal border, the site also carries historical importance, as it was used during the Second World War. Officials believe its revival could enhance both regional development and connectivity in northern Bihar.
If the airport becomes operational again, it is expected to benefit people across Gopalganj and nearby Siwan district. For many residents working in other parts of India, especially cities like Delhi and Mumbai, it could reduce long-distance travel needs by allowing them to fly directly from their home region. The development is being seen as a potential boost to both convenience and local economic activity.
