Samastipur: The Bihar cabinet has approved ₹44 crore for the construction of a second bridge over the Budhi Gandak river, aiming to ease persistent traffic congestion in Samastipur city. The new bridge will replace the existing old iron bridge, which will be demolished to make way for the modern structure.
DM Roshan Kushwaha reiterated that the Detailed Project Report (DPR) will be prepared within the next 15 to 20 days, paving the way for the official start of construction.
During his Pragati Yatra on January 13, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar personally inspected the proposed site and assured residents that a new bridge would be built to improve connectivity between Samastipur and Darbhanga. With its construction, the two bridges will function as separate up and down routes, significantly reducing traffic congestion.
District Magistrate Roshan Kushwaha confirmed that construction work on the bridge is set to commence within the next 15 to 20 days. The existing bridge on the Samastipur-Darbhanga main road often experiences severe traffic jams, leading to long queues extending up to the overbridge and Mukh Bazar. To further streamline traffic flow, roundabouts will be constructed on both sides of the bridge.
The new bridge is also expected to boost local businesses, particularly those operating around the Market Committee area. Business owners frequently face delays due to traffic congestion when traveling for trade. The second bridge will provide easier access, improving the overall business environment in Samastipur.
