Samastipur: A village Mukhiya in Samastipur district was shot dead on Thursday evening, his body later recovered from near a water tank close to the Satanpur Mosque.
The deceased, identified as Manoranjan Giri, mukhiya of Karihara Panchayat under Ujiarpur police station, was travelling on his motorbike from Satanpur Chowk to his village when armed assailants lying in wait opened fire. He was shot in the chest and died instantly, police said.
Locals rushed to the spot after hearing gunfire and found Giri’s body near the tank. Police, along with Dalsinghsarai DSP Vivek Kumar Sharma, arrived shortly after and began investigations.
“On August 21, a man named Vikram Giri of Madhodih village in Karihara Panchayat was murdered, in which mukhiya Manoranjan Giri was an accused. While that probe was still underway, he was shot dead today,” Sharma said.
Police confirmed that Giri himself had a criminal background. His body has been sent for post-mortem examination, and officers say they are probing possible links between the two murders.
