Patna/Samastipur: A potentially deadly incident was averted in Bihar’s Samastipur district on Saturday after villagers detained a young man who allegedly threatened another resident with a firearm and fired a shot while attempting to escape, police said.
The incident took place in Rampur Pagda panchayat under the Dalsinghsarai police station area. According to officials, the suspect arrived on a motorcycle and pointed a pistol at a man seated outside his home, triggering panic among nearby residents. Villagers quickly intervened, chasing the suspect as he tried to flee the scene. During the pursuit, the man allegedly fired a round in an effort to free himself, but failed to escape. No injuries were reported.
Witnesses said the suspect discarded the firearm near the roadside before being caught. He was subsequently handed over to the police along with the recovered weapon.
The accused has been identified as Krishna Kumar, son of Manoj Kumar Singh, a resident of Ballochak village in the Chak Chakwaudheen panchayat. Police said a case has been registered and an investigation is underway to determine the motive behind the attack.
Senior police officers confirmed that video footage of the incident, showing villagers restraining the suspect, has circulated widely on social media. Authorities are examining the footage as part of the inquiry.
Deputy superintendent of police Vivek Kumar Sharma praised the villagers for their alertness, saying their timely intervention prevented a serious crime. Police are also investigating whether the suspect had accomplices or prior enmity with the intended target.
