Patna: Shailesh Kumar, an ultra runner from Bihar’s Saran district who serves in the Indian Navy, has completed the Badwater 135 Ultramarathon in California’s Death Valley in 29 hours, 28 minutes and 37 seconds.
According to the report, Kumar covered the 135-mile, or approximately 217km, course to record the fastest performance by an Indian participant in the event.
From Saran Village To International Ultra Running
Kumar was born in Kamalpur village in the Garhka block of Saran district. He comes from a farming family and joined the Indian Navy in 2013.
He is currently serving at the Naval Aircraft Yard in Kochi, Kerala, according to the report.
Kumar began running in 2014 as part of his fitness routine before gradually moving into competitive long-distance and ultra-distance running.
Early Success In Ultra Running
After completing two half marathons and a full marathon, Kumar entered ultra running.
In 2018, he participated in the Run the Rann 101km Ultramarathon in Dholavira, Gujarat, where he finished third overall in his first ultra-distance event.
He later competed in several ultra-distance races in India and abroad, including the Spartathlon in Greece, where he completed the 246km event in 33 hours, 56 minutes and 22 seconds, according to the report.
Badwater 135 Challenge
The Badwater 135 is an ultra-distance race held in California’s Death Valley and covers approximately 217km.
The event is known for its demanding route and extreme weather conditions.
According to the report, Kumar prepared for around six months for the event and covered more than 3,000km during his training period.
Record Performance
Kumar crossed the finish line in 29 hours, 28 minutes and 37 seconds.
The performance established a new personal milestone for Indian participation in the race, with the report describing him as the first Indian to record the fastest finish by an Indian runner at the Badwater 135.
Kumar’s achievement adds to Bihar’s growing presence in endurance sports, with the Saran-born athlete representing India on the international ultra-running stage.
