Patna: Bihar’s weather has undergone a significant change under the influence of a low-pressure area and associated cyclonic circulation over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining West Bengal-Odisha coasts, according to Patna Meteorological Centre.
Extremely heavy rainfall was recorded at isolated locations in Gaya and Siwan during the past 24 hours. Mohra and Atri in Gaya recorded 138.4 mm of rain, while Raghunathpur in Siwan received 118.2 mm.
Heavy rainfall was also reported from several locations in Aurangabad, Araria, Nalanda, Patna and Kishanganj. Strong winds reaching speeds of 41 km/h were recorded in Kishanganj.
Heavy rain forecast in five districts
The Meteorological Department has forecast heavy rainfall on August 29 in Banka, Bhagalpur, Gaya, Katihar and Nawada.
South-western and south-eastern parts of Bihar may also experience strong winds of 30-40 km/h accompanied by lightning.
A separate heavy rainfall alert has been issued for August 30 in Aurangabad, Begusarai, Gaya, Jehanabad, Nalanda, Nawada and Rohtas.
Darbhanga records highest temperature
Despite the rainfall, temperatures remained relatively high in several parts of the state.
Darbhanga recorded the highest maximum temperature at 36.7°C, while the state’s average maximum temperature ranged between 33.8°C and 36.7°C.
The lowest minimum temperature was recorded in Gaya at 24°C.
Residents advised to take precautions
Residents have been advised to remain indoors during thunderstorms and avoid open areas during lightning activity. People should take shelter in concrete buildings and maintain a safe distance from tall trees, electric poles and metal structures.
Heavy rainfall could also result in waterlogging in low-lying urban areas and rising river water levels. People living in areas vulnerable to flash floods have been advised to exercise caution and avoid venturing into waterlogged or flood-prone locations.
The current weather conditions are being attributed to increased monsoon activity associated with the weather systems over the Bay of Bengal and the adjoining eastern coast.
