Patna: The Bihar government has appointed S.D. Sanjay as the state’s new Advocate General following approval by the Council of Ministers during a meeting chaired by Chief Minister on Wednesday.
The appointment comes after the resignation of former Advocate General P.K. Shahi on June 14, 2026. The state government subsequently initiated the process of selecting a successor and finalised Sanjay’s appointment.
Veteran Legal Professional
Widely regarded as one of the country’s experienced legal practitioners, Sanjay earned his LLB degree with honours from the Campus Law Centre in 1984.
He began practising at the Patna High Court and built a reputation in constitutional law, public interest litigation, and civil and criminal matters.
Over a legal career spanning more than four decades, Sanjay has appeared in several significant cases before the Supreme Court of India and various High Courts across the country.
Previous Government Roles
In 2010, Sanjay was appointed Additional Advocate General for the Bihar government.
He later served as Additional Solicitor General at the Patna High Court after being appointed by the Central Government in 2015. In that role, he represented the Union government in a range of matters until 2020.
On September 11, 2024, he was appointed Additional Solicitor General of India, a position through which he continued to represent the Central Government, including before the Supreme Court.

Several prominent members of the legal community welcomed Sanjay’s appointment.
Those who extended congratulations include Manan Kumar Mishra, Chairman of the Bar Council of India; Ramakant Sharma; Advocates Association President Yogesh Chandra Verma; Bar Association President Sanjay Singh; Lawyers Association President Umashankar; and Government Advocate Prashant Pratap.
Members of the legal fraternity expressed confidence that Sanjay’s extensive courtroom experience and constitutional expertise would strengthen the state’s legal representation in courts.
