Patna: Rising humidity and increasing temperatures across Bihar have begun affecting daily health conditions, with experts advising people to rely on seasonal fruits and vegetables to prevent dehydration and heat-related complications.
Health specialists say the body loses water and energy rapidly during summer, making diet a key factor in maintaining hydration, immunity and digestive balance.
Seasonal Diet Recommended for Summer Health
Water-rich seasonal fruits and vegetables are considered essential during hot weather as they help provide vitamins, minerals and energy while supporting hydration. Experts note that consumption should remain balanced and aligned with individual health conditions.
Raw mango, locally known as kairi, and preparations like aam panna help maintain electrolyte balance and offer protection against heatstroke. Ripe mangoes, on the other hand, provide energy, fibre and Vitamin A.
However, diabetic individuals are advised to limit mango intake, as excessive consumption may lead to indigestion, increased body heat and skin-related issues. It is also recommended to avoid consuming cut mangoes that have been left exposed in open environments.
Hydration Through Fruits Like Watermelon and Muskmelon
Experts note that watermelon, containing nearly 90 percent water, is effective in preventing dehydration. Muskmelon is considered beneficial for digestion and cooling the body.
They also advised against purchasing pre-cut fruits from roadside vendors due to hygiene risks. Excess water intake immediately after consuming fruits should be avoided, according to health guidance.
Cooling Vegetables and Traditional Remedies
Cucumber and kakri are widely recommended for their cooling properties and fibre content, which support digestion and prevent constipation. However, individuals prone to colds or digestive sensitivity are advised to avoid consuming them at night.
Bael sherbet continues to be recommended for its cooling effect on the stomach and its usefulness in addressing acidity and diarrhoea, though excessive intake may lead to constipation.
Jamun, currently available in select markets, is considered beneficial for blood sugar regulation and digestive health. Experts advised moderation and cautioned against consuming it on an empty stomach or immediately after milk.
Litchi, rich in Vitamin C and energy, should be consumed only in fresh and ripe form. Health specialists warned against overconsumption, particularly in children, and advised avoiding raw or semi-ripe fruits.
Vegetable Prices Ease in Local Markets
Alongside dietary advisories, green vegetables have become more affordable in local markets due to increased supply. Prices of common vegetables, including bottle gourd (lauki), ridge gourd (torai), pointed gourd (parwal), bitter gourd (karela), okra (bhindi), sponge gourd (nenua), eggplant (baingan) and ivy gourd (kundri), are currently ranging between Rs 20 and Rs 30 per kilogram.
A vegetable vendor, said most vegetables are available within this price range, while jackfruit is being sold at around Rs 50 per kilogram.
Ayurvedic Perspective on Vegetables
Expert said vegetables carry significant Ayurvedic value in maintaining body balance during summer.
He noted that bottle gourd helps regulate body temperature and support digestion, while ridge gourd is light and useful for relieving constipation. Pointed gourd supports immunity and digestion due to its fibre content.
Bitter gourd is associated with blood sugar regulation, and okra is considered beneficial for digestive health and bone strength, he added.
