Patna: AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi, on a two-day visit to Seemanchal, has announced his support for the Nitish Kumar government, signaling a strategic move in Bihar’s political landscape. While the statement does not affect the current government’s stability, it sends a strong message from Patna to Delhi about Owaisi’s growing influence.
During his visit on November 23, Owaisi said, “We are ready to support the Nitish Kumar government, but Seemanchal must receive justice. Development should not be limited to Patna and Rajgir. Seemanchal still struggles with erosion, migration, poverty, and corruption. The government should show seriousness on these issues.”
Political analysts say Owaisi’s support could have multiple implications:
1. Strengthening Nitish Kumar Amid BJP Pressure
Nitish Kumar, leading the government with support from the BJP, LJP(R), HAM(S), and RLM, is reportedly facing pressure from the BJP, particularly after leaving the Home Ministry for the first time. Senior journalist Sanjay Singh notes that Owaisi’s backing could ease some of this pressure and provide Nitish an opportunity to explore alternative alliances.
With the JD(U) winning 85 of the 101 contested seats, a potential alliance with the RJD, Congress, AIMIM, and Left parties could secure a majority of 126 MLAs—enough to reduce dependence on the BJP. Analysts suggest that a strengthened Nitish Kumar could benefit Owaisi by minimizing communal polarization and consolidating his political presence in Bihar.
2. Expanding Muslim Support Base
Owaisi’s efforts are also aimed at attracting Muslim voters who may feel sidelined by the Grand Alliance. According to CSDS data, support for the Grand Alliance among Muslims dropped from 76% in 2020 to 70% in 2025, while AIMIM’s vote share rose by 3% to 9%.
In the 2025 elections, AIMIM fielded candidates in 28 assembly seats, winning five in Seemanchal: Baisi, Aamro, Kochadhaman, Bahadurganj, and Jokihat. The party’s performance in these districts impacted the Grand Alliance’s vote share, leading to losses in key seats. Political analysts note that Owaisi’s growing popularity among Muslim youth is shaping his strategy to secure both development and political influence.
3. Consolidating Influence in Seemanchal
Owaisi is also seeking to establish dominance in Seemanchal by aligning with the government. Senior journalist Ashok Kumar explains that this move helps protect his constituency from administrative pressure and ensures that local development and security concerns, such as infiltration issues, are addressed.
4. Safeguarding AIMIM MLAs from Defection
Owaisi’s statement also appears aimed at preventing defections among his newly elected MLAs. Four of AIMIM’s five MLAs in Bihar are newcomers without prior political experience. In 2022, four of AIMIM’s 2020-elected MLAs had defected to the RJD, leaving only Akhtarul Iman in the party. Aligning with Nitish Kumar could stabilize the remaining MLAs and mitigate political uncertainty.
Nitish Kumar took oath as Bihar’s Chief Minister for a record 10th time on November 20. Analysts say Owaisi’s support, though symbolic for now, could have strategic ramifications in Seemanchal and for Bihar politics in the months ahead.
