Patna: The Bihar government has appointed retired IPS officer Shobha Ohatker as the permanent Chairperson of the Bihar Staff Selection Commission (BSSC), filling a key position at a time when the state is preparing for large-scale recruitment across government departments.
The General Administration Department issued a notification confirming the appointment. Ohatker, a 1990-batch IPS officer, retired on June 30, 2026, after serving as Director General of Home Guards and Fire Services.
Her appointment replaces the interim arrangement under which senior IAS officer Arvind Kumar Chaudhary was holding additional charge of the Commission.
Why Does The Appointment Matter?
The BSSC has been functioning without a full-time chairperson for some time, a situation that officials say affected the pace of several recruitment examinations.
With a permanent head now in place, the government expects the Commission to accelerate recruitment processes and conduct examinations within scheduled timelines.
Among the key recruitment drives expected to gain momentum are:
- BSSC Second Inter-Level Combined Competitive Examination
- BSSC Fourth Graduate Level Combined Competitive Examination (CGL-4)
- Technical and non-technical recruitments across various government departments
The appointment comes as Bihar prepares to recruit more than 1.72 lakh employees in the coming months, making the Commission’s role increasingly significant.
Focus On Transparency And Exam Integrity
The government has said it expects the Commission to function with greater transparency and accountability under Ohatker’s leadership.
Officials believe her administrative experience could help strengthen measures against paper leaks, examination irregularities and organised cheating networks, commonly referred to as “exam mafias”.
Why Is She Known As ‘Hunter Wali Madam’?
During her policing career, Shobha Ohatker earned a reputation as one of Bihar’s toughest police officers.
While serving as Superintendent of Police in districts including Patna, Darbhanga, Vaishali and Saran, she became known for strict action against criminals and eve-teasers.
Her uncompromising policing style earned her the popular nickname “Hunter Wali Madam”, reflecting her image as a disciplinarian known for swift enforcement of the law.
Bihar’s First Woman Director General
Ohatker also made history as the first woman IPS officer to serve as Director General of Police-level leadership in Bihar, heading the Home Guards and Fire Services.
During her tenure, she focused on modernising the Home Guards organisation and oversaw reforms that included the training and induction of more than 15,000 personnel.
Nearly Four Decades In Public Service
Originally from Pune, Maharashtra, Ohatker completed her postgraduate studies in Political Science in Hyderabad before joining the IPS at the age of 22.
She began her policing career as an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) in Patna City in 1992 and went on to serve in several senior positions during a career spanning nearly 36 years.
With her appointment as BSSC Chairperson, she now takes charge of one of Bihar’s most important recruitment agencies at a time when the state is preparing for one of its largest hiring drives in recent years.
