Siwan: In an extraordinary feat of horticultural innovation, Ashok Singh, a resident of Nagauli village in Siwan district, has developed a mango tree that bears four different varieties of mangoes—without any formal training or scientific assistance.
Ashok Singh’s hybrid tree produces Amrapali, All Time, Dussehri, and Mallika mangoes, each with distinct color, taste, and size. His breakthrough has become a local marvel and is now gaining attention across Bihar as a model for climate-resilient and profitable farming.
Self-Taught Horticulturist Creates Hybrid Marvel
Ashok began experimenting with grafting techniques four years ago. Today, he has successfully cultivated 10 such trees, all of which have produced a healthy crop. Remarkably, these trees begin to bear fruit within just two years—significantly faster than the usual four to five years required by traditional mango trees.
“Without any scientific help or agricultural training, I created this new hybrid mango variety using simple grafting methods,” Singh shared, proudly displaying his thriving orchard.
Growing Demand for Unique Mango Saplings
The success of Singh’s innovation has sparked interest among local farmers. His saplings, which mature quickly and yield multiple varieties, are in growing demand. Farmers from nearby districts are already buying plants from his nursery.
500+ Plant Varieties on Eight Acres of Land
Singh has transformed his eight-acre ancestral farmland into a full-fledged horticultural nursery. He now grows over 500 varieties of fruits, flowers, and rare spices. His collection includes exotic species like Thailand’s White Water Apple, Mian Zaki mango, and rare plants from Bengal.
Despite holding an MA in Geography, Ashok chose to pursue farming, applying his knowledge of soil and climate to achieve remarkable results. Inspired by modern nurseries in Kolkata, he decided to make gardening both his passion and profession.
Breaking Climate Boundaries
Singh hasn’t stopped at mangoes. He is also cultivating typically hill-grown fruits like peaches, apples, and white jamun on the plains—proving that regional climate limitations can be overcome through experimentation and dedication.
His achievements are not just limited to personal success. Singh’s journey is motivating other farmers in his village and across Bihar to explore innovative agricultural practices.
