Patna: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Patna inaugurated the four-day 3rd Annual Conference of the Society of Physical Chemistry (SoPhyC-2025) on Saturday, marking the beginning of a major scientific event aimed at advancing research and collaboration in the field of physical chemistry.
Organised by the Department of Chemistry, IIT Patna, the conference brings together distinguished scientists, researchers, and students from across India and abroad. The inauguration ceremony featured Prof. Biman Bagchi, President of the Society of Physical Chemistry; Prof. T. N. Singh, Director of IIT Patna; Dr. Anup Keshari, Associate Dean (R&D), IIT Patna; and Dr. Ranganathan Subramanian, Head of the Department of Chemistry. The event is convened by Dr. Snehashis Daschakraborty and Dr. T. Rajagopala Rao.

In his address, Prof. T. N. Singh highlighted the significance of SoPhyC-2025 as a catalyst for innovation and collaboration within the scientific community. He noted that such events strengthen research ecosystems and contribute to India’s technological and academic advancement.
Prof. Biman Bagchi described physical chemistry as the “universal language of natural sciences,” emphasising its foundational role in bridging diverse scientific disciplines and driving progress in modern research.
The conference features invited talks by eminent scientists, research paper presentations, and poster sessions showcasing work by young scientists and students. Discussions span a wide spectrum of topics, including molecular dynamics, spectroscopy, electrochemistry, quantum chemistry, reaction kinetics, and nanoscience. Special sessions are also dedicated to emerging domains such as artificial intelligence in chemistry, astrochemistry, and astrobiology.
With participation from over 200 delegates representing IITs, NITs, IISERs, central universities, and research institutes, SoPhyC-2025 serves as a vibrant platform for scientific exchange. Following its earlier editions at IIT Kanpur and IIT Bombay, the hosting of the third edition at IIT Patna marks a significant milestone for both the institute and Bihar’s growing research landscape.
