Patna: A land dispute in Sevati village under Dhanrua police station area of Patna turned violent on Sunday, with three members of the same family — including a sub-inspector — injured in a shooting.
Sub Inspector Manoj Kumar (50), his son Saavan Kumar (30), and nephew Rohit Kumar (30) were shot after a group of unidentified assailants reportedly fired around 20 rounds during a meeting aimed at resolving the land dispute. The gunfire sparked panic among villagers, with many fleeing the scene.
Rohit Kumar suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen, Manoj Kumar was hit in the leg, and his son Saavan sustained three gunshot wounds, near the hand, leg and head. All three were rushed to Patna for treatment; Rohit is being treated at a private hospital, while Manoj Kumar and his son are admitted at PMCH. The condition of two of the injured is said to be critical.
Masaurhi Sub-Divisional Police Officer Kanhaiya Singh confirmed the incident and said tensions remain high in the village. “A mutual settlement was underway when some youths opened fire,” he said. The police have recovered 10 empty bullet shells from the scene.
Sub Inspector Manoj Kumar is posted at Pathar Ghat police station in Saharsa district. He had travelled to Sevati with his son to help mediate the land dispute. According to family members, Saavan had only recently married on June 6, and had accompanied his father on Sunday to address the ongoing dispute.
The land in question reportedly belonged to Siddheshwar Prasad, a local man who passed away some time ago. The property was transferred to his son-in-law, but attempts by other villagers to forcibly occupy the land reportedly triggered Sunday’s violence.
Police said the attackers fled the scene while continuing to fire their weapons. Dhanrua police station officials and a Child Development Project Officer later arrived at the village with additional police reinforcements.
