Patna: Lt Gen (Retd.) Syed Ata Hasnain will be sworn in as the 30th governor of Bihar on March 14 at the Raj Bhavan in Patna.
The oath of office will be administered by the chief justice of the Patna high court, Justice Sangam Kumar Sahoo, during a ceremony scheduled to take place at the Raj Bhavan, according to a senior official.
Hasnain is expected to arrive in Patna on March 13 ahead of the swearing-in ceremony.
A retired lieutenant general of the Indian Army, Hasnain has held several key positions during his military career. He was commissioned into the 4th Battalion of the Garhwal Rifles after graduating from the Indian Military Academy in 1974.
During his service, he also served as colonel of the regiment of the Garhwal Rifles and the Garhwal Scouts, where he played a role in strengthening regimental traditions.
Hasnain retired from the army on June 30, 2013, after nearly four decades of service.
He comes from a family with a long association with the Indian Army. His father, Maj Gen Syed Mahdi Hasnain, served in the Garhwal Rifles and participated in the second world war with the 1st Battalion of the regiment.
Maj Gen Mahdi Hasnain later established the 4th Battalion of the Garhwal Rifles and served as commandant of the regimental centre in Lansdowne between 1964 and 1966.
Originally from Barabanki in Uttar Pradesh, Lt Gen Hasnain will assume office as Bihar’s governor following his appointment by the president of India.
