Patna: Tejashwi Prasad Yadav has been reappointed Leader of the Opposition in the Bihar Assembly, while former chief minister Rabri Devi has been named Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council, the state’s two top opposition posts.
The announcements were made by Assembly Speaker Prem Kumar and Legislative Council chairman Awadhesh Narayan Singh after a meeting of the Grand Alliance legislative party on Wednesday, during which Yadav was endorsed as its leader. Both leaders received congratulations from members across the House.
Under legislative rules, a party must hold at least 10% of total seats to claim the post of Leader of the Opposition. With 25 seats, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) meets the requirement, ending speculation over whether Yadav would retain the position despite a change of government.
Yadav, who previously served in the same role, was not present in the House on Wednesday, drawing criticism from the Janata Dal (United). JD(U) members reportedly searched for him across the Assembly, making sarcastic comments about his absence during the Governor’s address. He is currently in Delhi.
Rabri Devi’s appointment marks her return to a leadership position in the Council, where she also earlier served as Opposition leader.
This Assembly session includes only one member of the Lalu Prasad family: Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, who won from Raghopur. His elder brother Tej Pratap Yadav lost the Mahua seat in the recent election.
