Patna: India’s Under-19 cricket team edged closer to a sixth World Cup title as 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi produced a record-breaking innings in the final against England at the Harare Sports Club.
Suryavanshi’s whirlwind 175 off just 80 balls, at a strike rate of 218.75, included eight fours and more than 20 sixes, breaking the record for the most sixes in a single Under-19 World Cup edition. The previous mark of 18 had been held by Dewald Brevis in 2022.
The young prodigy reached his century in just 55 balls, prompting an emotional celebration where he removed his helmet, closed his eyes, and offered a silent prayer. The Indian dugout erupted in applause, recognising the rarity of such a feat in a World Cup final.
After losing Aaron George early for nine runs in the fourth over, Suryavanshi combined with captain Ayush Mhatre to take control of the innings. The duo attacked relentlessly, maintaining a rapid scoring rate and frustrating the English bowlers. Suryavanshi was particularly aggressive against spinner Farhan Ahmed, hitting two sixes off consecutive deliveries in the 15th over and following it with four boundaries, including three sixes, in the 17th over.
Mhatre’s composed innings of 50 provided crucial support, allowing India to reach a formidable total of 213 for two in 22 overs.
With Suryavanshi’s record-breaking knock setting the stage, India now have a commanding position as they chase a sixth Under-19 World Cup title. The teenager’s innings, blending power, precision, and composure, is likely to be remembered as one of the most remarkable performances in the tournament’s history.
