Saran: The Bihar government is set to construct a Greenfield airport in Sonpur, Saran district, on 4,228 acres of land, with the project estimated to cost Rs 1,302 crore. Administrative approval for the project is reportedly progressing swiftly, raising hopes that construction could begin soon.
Greenfield airports are built entirely on new land, without any pre-existing airport infrastructure. In Sonpur, this will include a runway, terminal building, control tower, parking facilities, and all necessary security arrangements, constructed from scratch. Such projects are typically designed with modern technology, environmental sustainability, and passenger convenience in mind.
Officials emphasise that the airport will not only facilitate easier air travel but also strengthen connections between Saran district and major cities across India. The project is expected to generate significant employment opportunities for locals, both during construction and operation. It is also anticipated to boost tourism, making events such as the Sonpur Fair and nearby religious and historical sites more accessible to visitors from across India and abroad.
Rajiv Pratap Rudy, Saran MP and former Union Minister, has been a long-standing advocate for an airport in Sonpur. Sources suggest his efforts were instrumental in bringing the project to this stage.
Authorities have stated that construction will commence once final administrative approval is granted. With this development, Sonpur and the surrounding region may see a significant transformation, marking a new phase of economic growth and connectivity for Saran district.
