Patna/New York: Agnivesh Agarwal, the only son of Vedanta Group founder and industrialist Anil Agarwal, passed away at the age of 49 following a tragic accident in the United States. He was critically injured during a skiing incident and was undergoing treatment at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, where he suffered a cardiac arrest and died, family sources confirmed.
Born on June 3, 1976, Agnivesh had deep roots in Bihar. He was born at Kurji Hospital in Patna and spent part of his childhood at his maternal home in Patliputra Colony. The neighbourhood remains subdued following news of his death.
Recalling memories, his maternal uncle Ashwini Gupta said Agnivesh often visited his maternal home whenever he found time. “He learned to walk here before moving to Mumbai with his family. The last time he visited Patna was in 2011. It is still hard to believe that he is no longer with us,” Gupta said.
Anil Agarwal, mourning the loss of his son, announced that he would donate 75 percent of his personal wealth. Agnivesh was associated with the Vedanta Group, whose valuation stands at around ₹2.43 lakh crore.
Childhood Ties with Patna
According to family members, Agnivesh completed his early schooling in Mumbai but regularly spent vacations in Patna. His uncle said family gatherings were common during his visits, with occasional outings to Maurya and Chanakya hotels.
Gupta also recalled that whenever Agnivesh visited Patna with his father, the duo made it a point to visit Miller High School, where Anil Agarwal had studied. “Father and son would spend hours there,” he said.
Agnivesh was described as cheerful and affectionate, especially close to his sister Priya. He studied at Mayo College, Ajmer, and was known to be a boxing champion, an avid horse rider, and a trained musician. “Music was his life. Whenever he visited Patna, he would play the guitar and entertain the family,” his uncle added.
Friends of Anil Agarwal from his school days in Patna also expressed grief. One of his schoolmates said that although he never met Agnivesh personally, Anil Agarwal had spoken highly of his son during a visit to Patna two years ago.
A Royal Wedding That Made Headlines
Agnivesh Agarwal married Pooja Bangur in 2001 in what was widely described as one of India’s most extravagant weddings. Pooja is the daughter of Harimohan Bangur, Managing Director of Shree Cement. The wedding took place at Goa’s Fort Aguada beach and reportedly cost around $100 million at the time, an amount estimated to be worth over ₹800 crore today.
Media reports said the celebrations included helicopter flower showers, chartered flights for guests from Mumbai and Kolkata, and performances by leading Bollywood stars. The wedding spanned several days, featuring themed events, traditional rituals by the sea, and a grand reception attended by industrialists, politicians and film celebrities. Actor Shah Rukh Khan was among those who performed during the celebrations.
The alliance between the Agarwal and Bangur families was based on mutual consent and long-standing ties between two of India’s prominent business houses. After Agnivesh began taking responsibility within the Vedanta Group, the marriage proposal was finalised following family discussions and horoscope matching, according to sources.
Tributes Pour In
Anil Agarwal shared photographs of his son on social media to announce his demise, triggering an outpouring of condolences from business leaders and well-wishers across the country.
As the family mourns the sudden loss, Agnivesh Agarwal is remembered not only as the heir to a business empire but also as a warm, talented individual whose ties to Patna and his family remained strong throughout his life.
