Patna: The elevation of Samrat Choudhary as leader of the BJP legislature party — paving the way for his appointment as chief minister of Bihar — has exposed both party discipline and underlying tensions within the state unit.
While deputy chief minister Vijay Kumar Sinha formally proposed Choudhary’s name at the crucial meeting, his remarks in its aftermath suggested a more layered political narrative.
Loyalty, sacrifice and party line
Speaking to reporters after the announcement in Patna, Sinha described himself as a “soldier” of the Bharatiya Janata Party, emphasising years of grassroots work and personal sacrifice.
“We have worked with sweat and blood, and made sacrifices,” he said, adding that the decision to back Choudhary was in line with the directives of party leadership, including Narendra Modi and Amit Shah.
Framing the move as part of a broader coalition strategy with the JD(U), Sinha said he had proposed Choudhary’s name to ensure continuity and stability within the NDA alliance.
A message of unity — and restraint
Sinha’s repeated invocation of “sacrifice” and adherence to central leadership decisions has been interpreted by political observers as an attempt to publicly signal unity, even as internal equations remain complex.
His remarks about “making the lotus bloom” — a reference to bringing the BJP to power — reinforced the idea of collective discipline overriding individual ambition.

History of friction
Observers point to a history of subtle rivalry between Sinha and Choudhary, occasionally spilling into the open.
In March 2022, the two leaders were involved in a heated exchange in the Bihar assembly when Sinha, then speaker, objected to delays in official responses from the Panchayati Raj department headed by Choudhary. The dispute escalated before an apology brought the matter to a close.
Tensions have also been visible during public appearances. During election rallies, Sinha was reportedly sidelined in key moments, including instances where Choudhary occupied prominent positions alongside Prime Minister Modi.
In another recent episode, Sinha resisted vacating a seat next to Nitish Kumar at a public function despite requests, underlining what observers describe as symbolic assertions of status.
Central leadership prevails
Despite these undercurrents, the final decision underscores the dominance of the BJP’s central leadership in determining state-level outcomes.
By proposing Choudhary’s name himself, Sinha aligned with the party’s broader strategy, avoiding any overt display of dissent.
