Patna: Nishant Kumar has declined to take up a potential role as deputy chief minister in Bihar, opting to stay out of the new government even as a leadership transition unfolds in the state.
His name had been under consideration for the post amid discussions within the NDA, but sources said he was unwilling to accept any position in the cabinet despite efforts to persuade him.
Refusal despite political speculation
Nishant Kumar, the son of outgoing chief minister Nitish Kumar, has largely stayed away from active politics, and his reported refusal reinforces his continued reluctance to enter public office.
Officials indicated that while attempts were made to convince him, the likelihood of his joining the government now appears minimal.
New government taking shape
The development comes as Samrat Choudhary is set to be sworn in as chief minister on April 15 at Lok Bhawan in Patna.
Two deputy chief ministers are also expected to take oath alongside him, with senior JD(U) leaders Vijay Kumar Chaudhary and Bijendra Prasad Yadav emerging as frontrunners for the roles.
Nitish Kumar steps down
Nitish Kumar has resigned as chief minister, marking the end of a long tenure during which he remained a central figure in Bihar politics, apart from a brief interruption when Jitan Ram Manjhi held the post.
The new government, led by the BJP, is expected to be formally sworn in on April 15, with further cabinet expansion likely at a later stage.
Focus shifts to cabinet formation
With Nishant Kumar opting out, attention has turned to the composition of the new cabinet. Sources suggest a mix of continuity and new entrants, with several ministers from the outgoing government likely to be retained.
The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for 11am, marking a significant political shift as Bihar prepares for its first BJP-led chief ministerial tenure.
