Bhagalpur/Patna: Traffic on the Vikramshila Setu between Bhagalpur and Naugachia is set to be completely suspended from September 1 to allow reconstruction of damaged sections of the bridge, with the work targeted for completion by November 30.
The proposed closure has raised concerns over the disruption it could cause to commuters and transport between the two sides of the Ganga.
In an effort to provide an alternative route, Bihar Road Construction Minister Shailendra, who is also the MLA from Bihpur, met Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari in New Delhi and requested the construction of a pontoon bridge parallel to the Vikramshila Setu during the reconstruction period.
Minister Seeks Temporary Alternative
Shailendra submitted a memorandum covering the Vikramshila Setu and several other road and bridge projects in Bihar.
According to the minister, Gadkari assured him that the demands would receive positive consideration. The Union minister also said he would visit Bihar to assess the projects and review reports submitted by officials before taking further action.
The proposed pontoon bridge, commonly known as a peepa-pul, would provide a temporary crossing for vehicles while the main bridge remains closed.
