Ara (Bhojpur): The Bihar Cabinet’s ambitious ‘Vishwamitra Path’ project is set to boost development prospects in Bhojpur and Buxar districts, with officials and residents expecting it to transform connectivity, tourism and the local economy in western Bihar.
Envisioned as more than just a roadway, the proposed corridor aims to link historical, religious and economic hubs along the Ganga. Buxar, regarded as the tapobhoomi of sage Vishwamitra and associated with several sites from the Ramayana era, is expected to gain renewed prominence through the project.
The nearly 90-km-long Vishwamitra Path is planned along the Ganga riverbank, connecting Koilwar to Buxar. It will also be linked to the riverfront road being developed in Patna, often referred to as Marine Drive, ensuring smoother and more direct connectivity between the state capital and western Bihar.
Officials say the project is likely to accelerate economic activity in key market areas such as Koilwar, Barhara, Ara Sadar, Bihia and Shahpur. Improved road infrastructure is expected to enhance regional trade and ease the movement of goods and people.
The project is also expected to provide a major push to tourism. Shivpur Ghat, a site of historical and religious significance, is proposed to be developed as a prominent tourist destination. Areas such as Barhara, Salempur Bangla, Gaura, Karja, Belwania and Damodarpur are also likely to witness increased commercial activity.
Experts believe the corridor could generate employment opportunities across sectors including transport, hospitality, agriculture trade, small industries and services. They have suggested that constructing the road along the existing flood protection embankment could reduce costs and speed up execution. While embankments already exist along much of the stretch between Buxar and Koilwar, some gaps remain, for which a detailed project report has been prepared at an estimated cost of several crores.
The project is also expected to benefit the agricultural sector by enabling faster and more cost-effective transportation of produce to major markets such as Patna, Varanasi, Gorakhpur and other parts of Uttar Pradesh. Key markets like Barhara, Shahpur, Bihia and Piro would gain improved access to trade hubs in Ballia and Saran.
Meanwhile, a Ganga bridge under construction near Shivpur Ghat, with an estimated cost of around Rs 2,000 crore, is in its final stages. Once completed, it is expected to further strengthen connectivity across the region.
Overall, the Vishwamitra Path project is being seen as a major infrastructure initiative that could lay the foundation for sustained economic, social and cultural development in western Bihar. Residents remain hopeful that the project will place Bhojpur and Buxar prominently on the state’s development map in the coming years.
