Patna: WhatsApp has introduced a new privacy feature called Strict Account Settings to help users protect their accounts from hacking, scams and unwanted contact. The messaging platform said the update is especially useful for journalists, activists, public figures and others who may face higher online risks. However, the feature is available to all users who want stronger security on their accounts.
One of the key changes under the new setting is stricter control over unknown numbers. When enabled, calls, messages, media files and attachments from numbers that are not saved in a user’s contacts are either blocked or silenced. This reduces the risk of phishing attempts, scam links and harmful files sent by strangers. As online fraud continues to rise, the company says the feature is designed to reduce exposure to such threats.
The update also introduces tighter control over profile information. Once Strict Account Settings is activated, a user’s profile photo, last seen status, online status and “About” information become visible only to saved contacts. This prevents unknown users from viewing personal details or tracking activity. In addition, two-step verification is automatically switched on and security alerts cannot be turned off, ensuring users are notified about any suspicious activity.
Group privacy has also been improved. Under the strict mode, no one can directly add a user to a group without permission. Instead, group invitations must be approved before joining. The feature can only be turned on or off from the primary device linked to the account, reducing the risk of misuse through secondary devices.
