Patna: From agricultural fields to financial institutions, from public sanitation to self-employment and governance, the spirit of women’s self-reliance and empowerment was on full display at an event marking International Women’s Day in Bihar. Organised by the Rural Development Department at Dashrath Manjhi Labour and Employment Study Institute, the event brought together women from various government initiatives, including Jeevika, Lohia Swachh Bihar Abhiyan, and Jal Jeevan Hariyali Abhiyan, to share their journeys of resilience and transformation.

The event, inaugurated by Shravan Kumar, Bihar’s Rural Development Minister, highlighted the crucial role of women in driving socio-economic change in the state. Women who have played a key role in the success of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) and environmental initiatives took the stage to recount their struggles and achievements, illustrating the impact of government-led programmes in shaping their lives.

Stories of Transformation

The gathering was a testament to the perseverance of countless women who have overcome obstacles to become self-sufficient. Among them was Meena Devi from Muzaffarpur, who spoke about how joining Jeevika allowed her to step beyond the confines of her home. “Now, after Patna, I am heading to Delhi to share my story of empowerment,” she said.

Similarly, Sulekha Kumari from Patna highlighted how self-help groups have helped women assert their rights, leading to a reduction in domestic violence. Lalita Devi from Vaishali echoed this sentiment, stating, “Women now have power and employment, which is making us self-reliant.”

In another inspiring account, Sulochana Devi from Bhojpur spoke about running mini-banks in remote villages, enhancing financial literacy and ensuring women’s access to credit. Meanwhile, Rinju Kumari from Jamui underscored the tangible benefits that government schemes have brought to her family and community, reinforcing the need for continued support and participation.

Addressing the gathering, Lokesh Kumar Singh, Secretary of the Rural Development Department, emphasised the department’s pivotal role in empowering women. “We are working in a structured manner to ensure self-reliance for women across the state,” he said.

Chief Executive Officer of Jeevika, Himanshu Sharma, praised the efficiency and dedication of women in implementing various schemes. “Women have been at the forefront of realising Bihar’s vision of a clean and drug-free state. Their self-confidence and hard work are paving the way for a new future,” he noted.

As part of the celebrations, a short film showcasing the impact of women in rural development was screened, highlighting their contributions to sanitation, financial independence, and environmental sustainability. The event also featured an exhibition, where the minister visited stalls displaying activities undertaken by rural women and lauded their efforts.

Honouring the Change-makers

To recognise their contributions, women leading transformative work in Jeevika, Lohia Swachh Bihar Abhiyan, Jal Jeevan Hariyali, and MGNREGA were honoured. In addition, 15 administrative blocks performing exceptionally well in rural development initiatives were felicitated.

Concluding the event, Shravan Kumar commended the efforts of women in bringing prosperity to villages through various government schemes. “Women are the backbone of rural development. Their participation is not just an achievement but a necessity for a better future,” he said.

The event ended on a celebratory note, with mementoes presented to the dignitaries and a vote of thanks delivered by Pratibha Rani, Mission Director of Jal Jeevan Hariyali Abhiyan. With inspiring stories and a collective commitment to progress, the event reinforced the role of women in shaping a more equitable and prosperous Bihar.
