Bhagalpur: A major push to urban infrastructure development in Bihar is set to gain momentum, with nearly Rs 1,600 crore to be invested in key cities with support from the World Bank. Bhagalpur has been included in this ambitious initiative, raising expectations of comprehensive urban transformation.
A five-member World Bank team is scheduled to visit Bhagalpur on April 21 and 22 to conduct a detailed assessment of the city’s current infrastructure and civic facilities. The visit aims to evaluate ground realities and identify priority areas for development.
The information was shared by Municipal Commissioner Kislay Kushwaha during a general board meeting in response to a query raised by councillor Ashwini Joshi ‘Monty’.
Ward-level inspection planned
Officials said the World Bank team will not limit its assessment to major roads or ongoing projects but may extend inspections to the ward level if required. The team is expected to review essential civic infrastructure, including water supply, sewerage systems, roads, sanitation and other public services.
Development plan to follow assessment
Based on the findings of the visit, a detailed development roadmap will be prepared, identifying the city’s specific needs. Projects will then be designed accordingly and implemented with World Bank assistance.
Civic boost likely for Bhagalpur
If approved, the initiative could significantly improve road networks, drainage systems, drinking water supply and sewerage infrastructure. It may also strengthen urban sanitation and waste management systems, along with other critical civic amenities.

Officials said the initiative is expected to promote balanced and planned urban development not only in Bhagalpur but also in other cities across Bihar. The project is being seen as a key step towards equipping cities with modern infrastructure and improving overall quality of life for residents.
