Patna: Patna is set to witness renewed excitement as Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park prepares to introduce 23 new wildlife species in a major expansion effort. Popularly known as Patna Zoo, the park has brought in these animals from zoos in Delhi and Rohtak under an exchange programme aimed at improving conservation and visitor experience. Officials have said that the animals are currently under quarantine and will be made available for public viewing after 10 May, once they have fully adapted to their new environment.
Among the new arrivals, the white tigress is expected to become the biggest attraction, drawing large crowds during the summer season. Alongside her, the zoo has welcomed six Sangai deer, four white blackbucks, and a variety of birds including Dalmatian pelicans, painted storks and silver pheasants. A particularly notable addition is the green iguana, which will be displayed at the zoo for the first time. These reptiles have been brought from Rohtak and are expected to add a new dimension to the zoo’s reptile collection.
To ensure the comfort of the new animals, the zoo administration has built special enclosures that closely resemble their natural habitats. The green iguanas, for instance, will be kept in a specially designed glass enclosure with branches, plants and water features to help them adjust. Similarly, a separate enclosure has been created for the white blackbucks near the existing blackbuck area. Zoo officials have also taken care to provide species-specific diets and proper living conditions so that the animals can adapt quickly and remain healthy.
Authorities have said that the animal exchange programme plays an important role in maintaining genetic diversity and preventing inbreeding among captive wildlife. At the same time, special arrangements have been made to protect animals from the rising summer heat. These include water coolers in enclosures, regular bathing for elephants, and cooling systems for reptiles. Veterinary teams are closely monitoring the health of all animals and ensuring they receive proper food and care. With these new additions, the zoo is expected to attract a large number of visitors in the coming weeks, strengthening its position as one of the key attractions in the region.
