Patna: Amid sweltering conditions across Bihar, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has offered a brief respite with a yellow alert issued for 23 districts, forecasting thundershowers and gusty winds through May 6. However, this relief is expected to be short-lived, as a heatwave looms over the state post-May 7.
According to the IMD, most regions in Bihar will witness light to moderate rainfall accompanied by winds blowing at speeds of 30 to 40 kmph. Maximum temperatures are likely to hover between 34°C and 36°C, while minimum temperatures will remain in the range of 26°C to 28°C, offering some temporary relief from the intense heat.
Districts under the yellow alert include Patna, Gaya, Bhagalpur, Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga, Samastipur, Nalanda, Begusarai, Bhojpur, Siwan, and Saran, among others. The department has urged residents—particularly farmers and those working outdoors—to remain cautious and follow safety advisories during this period.
However, meteorologists warn that from May 7 onwards, rainfall activity will likely decline, paving the way for a sharp rise in temperatures, particularly in western Bihar. The IMD has signalled the onset of a heatwave, with daytime and nighttime temperatures expected to soar.
Experts attribute this shift to seasonal transitions typical of early May, though they caution residents to take heatwave warnings seriously. Health professionals advise avoiding prolonged sun exposure and staying hydrated. The state government and Disaster Management Department have directed all district administrations to remain on high alert and implement necessary precautionary measures.
