Bihar Seeks Central Aid for Environmental and Wildlife Conservation Projects as State Minister Prem Kumar Meets Union Minister Bhupender Yadav

Patna: The Bihar government has sought financial assistance from the Centre to support environmental conservation, wildlife protection, and climate resilience initiatives in the state. The request was made by state environment, forest and climate change minister Dr. Prem Kumar during a meeting with Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav. A detailed proposal has been submitted to the Central Government, outlining the need for grants across multiple schemes and projects.

After submitting the memorandum, Bihar’s Environment Minister Dr Prem Kumar highlighted that several key initiatives remain stalled, awaiting central approval and funding. These include the next instalment of the Integrated Wildlife Habitat Development Scheme (60:40), Tiger Project, and Gaj Yojana (60:40 and 50:50). Additionally, a Rs 56.85 lakh proposal has been submitted for the development of Nagar Van on 13.75 hectares in Araria Forest Division under the Nagar Van Yojana (2024–25).

Dr Kumar further pointed out that an updated model estimate of Rs 1.40 lakh has been sent to the Centre following a wage rate increase under the School Nursery Scheme. He also urged the government to approve plans for forest restoration and water conservation along the Ganga under the Namami Gange Scheme (Forestry Interventions for Ganga). Other key proposals awaiting approval include the Rajouli Wildlife Sanctuary (Nawada), Nakati Bird Sanctuary (Jamui), a proposed zoo in Araria, and Gautam Buddha Sanctuary in Gaya—all crucial for biodiversity conservation.

The state environment and forest department has identified eight priority areas for central cooperation, including forest conservation and afforestation, biodiversity protection, water resource management, wildlife conservation, air quality improvement, waste management, green infrastructure, and environmental education.

“We are committed to tackling environmental conservation and climate change in Bihar, but the Centre’s support is essential given the state’s current challenges,” Dr Kumar said. He expressed optimism that the Union government would approve these projects soon, providing the financial boost needed for Bihar’s environmental sustainability efforts.
