Jamui / Patna : Bihar is set to construct its largest concrete dam in Jamui district under the Barnar Reservoir Project, with an estimated cost of Rs2,579.37 crore. The announcement was made during Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s Pragati Yatra on February 7.

The project aims to provide irrigation to 22,226 hectares of farmland in the region, employing modern construction technologies to boost agricultural productivity and improve groundwater levels.

Jamui District Magistrate Abhilasha Sharma described the dam as a “lifeline” for farmers in the Sono, Jhajha, Khaira, and Gidhaur blocks. She confirmed that the Detailed Project Report (DPR) had been completed, and the administration was awaiting a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Forest Department. The scheme, she added, was among the Chief Minister’s priority projects and would be implemented swiftly.

In addition to the dam, Nitish Kumar announced 11 new development projects worth Rs2,903 crore for Jamui. These include canal expansion under the Upper Kiul Reservoir Scheme, the development of Garhi Dam as an eco-tourism hub, a new bridge over the Kiul River, and improvements to Gidhaur Stadium. Other initiatives include the beautification of Patneshwar Dham, road and bridge construction in Sikeria, a new bridge over the Nakti River, the establishment of a degree college in Chakai, new government offices, and a sports complex with a shooting range in Jamui city.

“These projects will soon be implemented on the ground,” Abhilasha Sharma said, adding that the district was set for rapid development. “The administration is committed to their timely completion for the benefit of the people.”
