Patna: The Bihar government is providing safe housing for the homeless under the Deendayal Jan Ajeevika Yojana (Urban), which has been implemented in 129 municipal bodies across the state. So far, 4,303 homeless individuals have found shelter through this initiative. In Patna, the scheme was launched as a pilot project on October 1, 2024, at multiple locations, including R Block, Sheikhpura, Saidpur, McDowell Golambar, Gaighat, and Chhoti Pahari. With its success, the project has been extended for another six months, currently housing 325 people.
To further expand safe housing options, 12 permanent German hangars have been constructed in Patna Municipal Corporation, accommodating 406 people. Eight more hangars have been proposed, with construction already underway in Bairia and Malsalami. Additionally, 132 individuals are residing in permanent German hangars in Barh and Dumraon. These facilities offer improved living conditions for the homeless, ensuring shelter and safety.
Under this scheme, priority is given to those living on the streets, such as beggars and street vendors. Beneficiaries receive essential identification documents, including Aadhaar and voter ID cards, along with access to government schemes like pensions, PDS ration cards, health facilities, and free legal aid. Special provisions have also been made for women and the disabled, offering access to programs like the Ujjwala Scheme, One Stop Centre, and Women Helpline.
The Deendayal Jan Ajeevika Yojana (Urban) is funded in a 60:40 ratio between the central and state governments, with Rs. 271 crore allocated so far. Given the success of the pilot project, the government is planning to expand the scheme statewide to provide more homeless individuals with safe and dignified living conditions.
The shelter homes are equipped with essential amenities such as clean drinking water, proper sanitation, kitchen facilities, personal lockers, and fire safety measures. Additionally, children are provided with Anganwadi-related services, ensuring a supportive and hygienic environment for all residents.
