Patna : Tensions flared at the Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) in Patna after a second-year medical student, Abhinav Pandey, died from injuries sustained in a road accident. Fellow students have accused the hospital administration of failing to provide prompt medical care, triggering protests on campus.
Pandey, 20, was involved in a bike accident near Hattali Mor on April 7, according to Dr Manikant Singh, a colleague and fellow student. “We rushed him to IGIMS, but the hospital administration reportedly refused to provide a bed,” Singh said. “He was then taken to Paras Hospital, where he was admitted.”
Pandey succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter. The incident has sparked outrage among IGIMS students, who staged a sit-in protest outside the director’s residence late at night. The students claim that even after Pandey’s death, the administration was uncooperative.
“After his death, we requested an ambulance to take the body home, but the director, Prof Dr Binde Kumar, responded rudely,” Singh alleged. “He questioned how we dared to come to his residence and called the SDM and police instead.”
Dozens of students gathered on campus on Thursday, demanding accountability. “For two days, the hospital administration has been saying there are no vacant beds,” said one protesting student. “We want them to show the register. How can patients from across Bihar be accommodated while students of IGIMS are turned away? The director is most at fault. If justice isn’t served, we’ll continue our protest.”
The situation prompted a heavy police deployment on campus, with SDPO Saket Kumar arriving to mediate and urge calm among the students. As of now, the protest remains peaceful but tense.
