Siwan: A land dispute between siblings in Suryapura village, under the jurisdiction of Mairwa police station in Bihar’s Siwan district, turned deadly on Friday when a panchayat meeting convened to resolve the matter escalated into violence, leading to the death of a 60-year-old man.

The deceased, Bhagwan Sharma, had been involved in an ongoing eight-month dispute with his younger brothers over the division of six bighas of land located in Mairwa and Delhi. According to his wife, Gyanati Devi, the panchayat was taking place in the verandah of their home when a heated argument broke out.

“There has been a dispute over the division of 6 bighas of land in Mairwa and Delhi for the last eight months. The panchayat was sitting in the verandah of the house, when the three brothers started arguing about the division and the matter escalated so much that it reached the fight. Meanwhile, two brothers and their family members threw my husband on the ground and beat him to death with sticks,” she said.

Witnesses said the panchayat quickly descended into chaos as Sharma’s brothers—allegedly with help from other family members—attacked him with wooden sticks. He was rushed to the nearest primary health centre, where he was declared dead on arrival.

Following the incident, an FIR has been registered against five individuals—Subhash Sharma, Parshuram Sharma, Sudhir Sharma, Adarsh Sharma, and an unnamed woman—based on a complaint filed by Gyanati Devi.

Mairwa Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Chandan Kumar confirmed that the body has been sent for postmortem and raids are underway to arrest the accused. “In a panchayat being held over 6 bighas of land, a brother has beaten the brother to death. The body has been taken into custody and sent for postmortem. Raids are being conducted to arrest the accused,” he said.
