Patna: Bihar is developing an artificial intelligence-powered weather forecasting system capable of providing 10-day alerts, in a move aimed at enhancing disaster preparedness across the state.
The project, led by the Bihar Mausam Seva Kendra, will use AI and machine learning models along with high-performance computing to deliver more accurate, area-specific forecasts. Currently, the centre provides forecasts up to five days in advance.
Officials say the upgraded system will offer forecasts down to the panchayat level, enabling early warnings for events such as heavy rainfall and storms. The multi-hazard early warning system is designed to reduce the impact of climate-related disasters by giving communities more time to prepare.
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), which has previously supported meteorological initiatives in the state, is partnering on the project once again. Scientists from ISRO have helped draft the technical framework, while the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Patna has conducted a technical evaluation of the proposed system.
“A high-performance computational facility using the best available technology will be developed to support this AI-ML-based model,” said a department official. “Once implemented, Bihar will have one of the most technically advanced meteorological systems in the country.”
The Bihar Meteorological Service Centre was established to offer timely weather alerts and warnings to minimise the risks posed by natural disasters. The expansion to 10-day forecasting is part of a broader strategy to strengthen the state’s resilience in the face of climate change.
