Patna: The long-awaited India-Nepal Border Road Project, a key infrastructure initiative connecting seven districts along Bihar’s border with Nepal, has entered its final phase, with more than 80% of construction now completed, officials have confirmed.

Road construction minister Nitin Nabin said that out of the 554km stretch planned under the project, over 450km of roadwork has been completed. The state government is targeting December for completion, with the road expected to be opened to the public soon after.

Launched in 2010, the project is designed to improve both security and connectivity along the sensitive border, facilitating rapid movement of Border Security Force personnel and helping curb illegal cross-border activities, including infiltration and smuggling.

Stretching from Madanpur in West Champaran to Galgalia in Kishanganj, where it links to Siliguri in West Bengal, the road passes through West Champaran, East Champaran, Sitamarhi, Madhubani, Supaul, Araria, and Kishanganj districts. The project is being constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 2,486 crore, while the state government has allocated an additional Rs 3,300 crore for land acquisition and the construction of 131 bridges and culverts.

Officials say the road will serve as a lifeline for millions living in the border regions, enabling faster access to markets, healthcare, education, and facilitating the transport of agricultural produce. Nabin described the project as a “strategic and economic game changer” for the area, connecting remote villages to the mainstream of development.

The Bihar section forms part of the larger India-Nepal Border Road network, which spans 1,372km across Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, of which 554km lies within Bihar.

Minister Nabin added that the road will provide “swift and secure access to BSF posts while reinforcing government control over vulnerable stretches of the international border.”
