Patna: Shoppers and diners at Patna’s P&M Mall were momentarily gripped by panic on Tuesday as what appeared to be a terrorist attack unfolded — only to be later revealed as a high-intensity mock drill conducted by the Bihar Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS).
The simulated attack involved four “terrorists” armed with AK-47 rifles and hand grenades, who stormed the mall and “took” multiple hostages. Two controlled explosions were staged, triggering alarm among the public, many of whom were unaware of the exercise. ATS commandos swiftly arrived on the scene, launching a coordinated operation that spanned four hours. All “terrorists” were eventually neutralised and hostages rescued.
The drill was designed to test the readiness and response time of the ATS, as well as coordination with mall security and emergency services. CCTV surveillance was employed to locate the assailants, and mock crossfire ensued to simulate real-life engagement. The operation concluded successfully without any injuries or damage.
Officials stated that such drills have become more frequent following recent terror incidents across the country, including the Pahalgam attack, which has placed Bihar’s security forces on high alert, especially in border areas.
Earlier this month, a similar exercise was carried out at Mahavir Mandir near Patna Junction. Authorities have reiterated the importance of public cooperation and awareness during such drills to avoid unnecessary panic.
