Patna: A recent UNICEF report has highlighted a concerning trend in menstrual hygiene practices among women in Bihar, revealing that a significant majority do not utilize safe and clean methods during their periods. According to the findings, only 42 percent of women in the state employ safe menstrual hygiene practices, leaving a substantial 58 percent without access to or use of clean methods.
The report breaks down these figures further, indicating that only 42 percent of women aged 15-19 and 41 percent of those aged 20-24 use sanitary napkins. A notable disparity exists between urban and rural areas; while 59 percent of urban women use sanitary napkins, this figure drops to just 38 percent in rural areas.
When considering overall clean menstrual methods, 74 percent of women in urban areas adopt them, compared to 56 percent in rural areas. The report also provides data on younger girls: 52 percent of girls aged 10-11 use sanitary napkins, with 72 percent employing clean methods.
For girls aged 12 and above, the use of clean methods rises to 82 percent. The findings underscore an urgent need for improved awareness, accessibility, and education regarding menstrual hygiene across the state.
