Patna: In a move to make public transport safer and more affordable for women, the Bihar government is expanding the reach of its Pink Bus service. Initially launched in Patna on May 16, the service is now being extended to Muzaffarpur, Bhagalpur, and Purnia, where dedicated passes are being issued to students and working women.
The Pink Buses, launched with the aim of improving women’s safety and convenience, have female drivers and conductors assigned to each vehicle. This not only provides a secure travel environment but also fosters confidence among women commuters.
The Bihar State Road Transport Corporation (BSRTC) has begun setting up special camps at girls’ schools, women’s colleges, and bus depots to issue monthly Pink Bus passes. “We want to ensure that students don’t have to visit depots frequently. Camps will now be held at their institutions,” said a BSRTC officer. This facility is set to start within the week.
The scheme offers subsidised monthly passes for students at Rs 500, while working women will pay Rs 550. Starting in July, the buses are also expected to be equipped with air conditioning, enhancing comfort during the summer months.
With its expansion beyond Patna, the Pink Bus initiative reflects a growing commitment to gender-sensitive transport infrastructure in Bihar. In all four cities, depot managers have been tasked with overseeing smooth operations and the issuing of passes.
Officials believe this development will not only reduce travel costs but also encourage more women to use public transport confidently and independently.
