Bikramganj/Patna: A senior education official in Bihar’s Rohtas district was caught red-handed accepting a bribe on Wednesday, exposing entrenched corruption within the state’s education department.
The Vigilance Investigation Bureau team from Patna arrested Sudhirkant Sharma, Block Education Officer (BEO) of Bikramganj, along with Subhash Kumar, the office’s accounting assistant, for allegedly accepting a total of Rs 14,600 in bribes from a local teacher. The action was taken after a formal complaint and prior verification of the charges.
According to officials, the bribe was demanded in exchange for processing arrear payments and making corrections in the teacher’s service book. While Sharma allegedly accepted Rs 7,600, Kumar was caught taking Rs 7,000 during the raid.
The vigilance team detained both men on the spot and took them into custody, triggering a stir within the district education office. Although no official statement has been released so far, the arrests have prompted widespread discussion among education staff and local administrative circles.
The vigilance department is continuing its investigation into the matter.
