Patna: Children studying in government schools across Bihar will soon be taught about road safety. The Bihar Education Project Council has issued guidelines to all District Education Officers and District Program Officers to organise awareness sessions in schools. These sessions will teach students about basic traffic rules and how to stay safe on roads.
This decision was taken after a survey showed that many students did not know much about road safety. The survey was done last year as part of the School Zone Safety Program in Patna and other states like Assam, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Uttar Pradesh. It found that students lacked knowledge about how to cross roads safely or follow traffic signals.
The report revealed that India has only 1% of the world’s vehicles but accounts for 22% of global road accidents. Every day, around 1,130 accidents happen in the country, leading to 422 deaths. It also showed that 31 children die every 45 minutes in road accidents in India, which is a major concern for the government.
Officials said that by teaching children about road safety from an early age, many lives can be saved. The Transport Ministry is also working on large programmes to reduce road accidents across the country, and this school awareness drive is part of those efforts.
