Patna: The Bihar Assembly witnessed another day of turmoil on Thursday as a heated exchange broke out between Speaker Nandkishore Yadav and ministers from the BJP, the very party from which he was appointed. The latest confrontation followed remarks by Leader of the Opposition Tejashwi Yadav, who allegedly referred to BJP ministers as “monkeys”, prompting Minister Prem Kumar to seek a response on the floor of the House.
However, Speaker Yadav vehemently denied the request. Visibly angered, he ordered that the minister not be allowed to speak and suggested adjourning the session altogether. Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sinha attempted to intervene, urging the Speaker to let Kumar respond, but his plea was ignored.
The tension comes just a day after similar scenes unfolded in the Assembly. On Wednesday, RJD MLA Bhai Virendra reportedly used offensive language in the House, triggering protests from the ruling alliance. Yet instead of siding with his own party members, Speaker Yadav reprimanded them — including Deputy CM Vijay Sinha, Minister Jivesh Mishra and Krishnandan Paswan — for their conduct.
Meanwhile, Tejashwi Yadav again raised concerns over the alleged deletion of Bihari names from the electoral roll, stressing the importance of protecting every citizen’s right to vote. “Baba Saheb gave the poor the right to vote — we must defend that,” he said. Responding on behalf of the government, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Vijay Chaudhary assured the House that “no genuine voter will be left out.”
The opposition, led by the RJD, continued its protest throughout the day, leading to repeated disruptions. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar attempted to deflect criticism by invoking the governance record of Lalu Prasad Yadav and Rabri Devi, further intensifying the war of words. A confrontation between RJD MLAs and Deputy CM Sinha ensued.
