Gopalganj: A woman in Bihar’s Gopalganj district was brutally attacked by a pack of stray dogs, with CCTV footage showing the harrowing assault lasting for nearly 30 minutes. The incident occurred near the main gate of the Kuchaykot police station on Wednesday, though the footage only surfaced on Thursday.
The video shows the woman, identified as Sarita Devi from Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh, walking along the road when two dogs first begin to chase her. Moments later, more than a dozen dogs surround and attack her, tearing her clothes and repeatedly biting and scratching her. Despite her screams and attempts to flee, the dogs continue the assault as she collapses and writhes in pain.
Devi, who is reported to be mentally unwell and had been living on the streets of Kuchaykot for some time, was left severely injured. A passer-by eventually intervened and rushed her to Gopalganj Sadar Hospital, where she is currently receiving treatment in the emergency ward.
The graphic nature of the attack has reignited concerns over the rising population of stray dogs and the risks they pose in urban and semi-urban areas.
Speaking to reporters, Ajeet Kumar, former director of the Institute of Animal and Production, said that such attacks are often a result of changes in animal behaviour driven by food scarcity and aggressive instincts. “Ferocious dogs that feed on meat can form dangerous packs. Unlike rabid dogs, which attack out of fear and confusion, these animals target humans deliberately to feed,” he said.
He further warned that such packs often show no hesitation in targeting vulnerable individuals, and their aggression can escalate if unchecked. Experts are now calling for urgent intervention from local authorities to manage the stray dog population and ensure public safety.
