Patna: Proceedings in the Bihar Assembly descended into chaos on thursday as a heated exchange between members of the ruling NDA and the opposition RJD spiralled into verbal abuse, physical threats, and a near-violent scuffle. The Speaker was forced to adjourn the House, while Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had to be escorted out under a security cover amid the fracas.
The disruption began during a discussion on the Election Commission’s voter list revision in the second session of the day. Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav was addressing the issue when tensions flared between him and Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha, soon drawing in BJP state president and Deputy CM Samrat Choudhary.
The confrontation escalated dramatically when Choudhary allegedly referred to Tejashwi’s father, Lalu Prasad Yadav, as a “criminal” and labelled RJD leaders as “robbers.” Tejashwi, in turn, questioned Choudhary’s authority to comment on integrity, sparking an extended shouting match.
Matters worsened when BJP MLA Janak Singh reportedly hurled abusive remarks directed at Tejashwi’s mother and sister. In response, Tejashwi retorted, “Speak any louder and your pants will be wet,” further inflaming the situation.
As the shouting intensified, the Speaker adjourned the House. But the uproar continued. BJP MLA Sanjay Singh reportedly broke a microphone and charged towards opposition members. Several BJP MLAs followed, prompting RJD legislators to surge forward in retaliation. A scuffle appeared imminent as more than two dozen MLAs from both sides clashed in the well of the House.
Security personnel quickly intervened to prevent violence, forming a barrier between the opposing groups. Amid the turmoil, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar was quietly escorted out by his security detail, while Deputy CMs Choudhary and Sinha remained inside. Opposition leader Tejashwi Yadav and his fellow RJD legislators exited the Assembly shortly after.
