Patna: In a significant announcement made via Twitter today, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has directed the immediate constitution of the Bihar State Safai Karamchari Commission. This move, coming ahead of the state’s assembly elections later this year, aims to safeguard the rights and interests of sanitation workers across Bihar.
Chief Minister Kumar expressed his commitment to the welfare of this often-marginalized community, stating, “I am happy to inform that to ensure the protection of the rights and interests of sanitation workers in the state of Bihar, welfare, rehabilitation, social upliftment, redressal of grievances and monitoring of various welfare schemes, I have directed the department to constitute the Bihar State Safai Karamchari Commission.”
Mandate and Composition of the New Commission

The newly formed commission will be tasked with a broad mandate, including:
- Providing suggestions to the government regarding the interests and rights of sanitation workers.
- Reviewing existing welfare schemes related to sanitation work.
- Taking appropriate action to ensure the effective implementation of these schemes.
The Bihar State Safai Karamchari Commission will be comprised of a Chairman, a Vice-Chairman, and five members, with a crucial provision that at least one of the members will be a woman or a transgender individual.
Chief Minister Kumar emphasized the commission’s vital role in fostering inclusivity and development: “This commission will play an important role in bringing the deprived sections of society involved in sanitation work into the mainstream and in their social and economic development.”
