Gaya: When determination overcomes adversity, individual success often becomes a collective source of pride. That is the story of Shweta Bhagat, the daughter of a paan seller from a remote village in Bihar’s Gaya district, who has cleared the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) examination and taken up her first posting as an Official Language Officer under the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Bhagat, originally from Amethi village in Wazirganj block, was raised in Kolkata after her father, Sushil Bhagat, moved there in search of a livelihood. Farming alone could not sustain the family, and he opened a paan shop to provide for his children’s education. “My father worked day and night. If he had given up, I would not have reached here today,” she said.
Despite financial constraints, Bhagat studied in government schools from class five to 12, later completing a master’s degree in arts from Kolkata University, where she developed a strong interest in language and translation. She cleared the UPSC exam in her first attempt in 2023, and in late 2024 was posted as a Junior Translation Officer in Indore.
Her achievement has been celebrated in her native village, where residents described her success as “a victory for the entire community”. Bhagat said her accomplishment was not just personal, but “a matter of pride for the Malakar community and Amethi village”.
She added that her journey showed how hard work and resilience could overcome social and economic disadvantage: “No matter what the circumstances, the flight of dreams cannot be stopped.”
