Purnia: After years of demand for better air connectivity, Bihar witnessed the inauguration of Purnia Airport on Monday, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi declaring it a “historic step” towards strengthening the state’s transport network.
The Prime Minister, joined by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary and several central and state ministers, said the airport would open fresh avenues for employment, trade and tourism across northeast Bihar and particularly the Seemanchal region.
“Air connectivity is vital for national development. With Purnia Airport, Bihar has crossed a significant milestone,” PM Modi told a large gathering, adding that the central government would soon bring more major projects to the state.
CM Nitish Kumar welcomed the project as “a boon for Seemanchal,” stressing that it would reduce regional inequality and make travel to Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru easier. He said the airport would also boost investment and give farmers and traders new access to national markets.
The airport has been designed with modern technology and international standards, featuring a state-of-the-art terminal, waiting lounges, advanced security and parking facilities. In its first phase, direct flights will operate to Delhi, Kolkata and Guwahati, with more routes to be added gradually.
Local representatives, MPs and MLAs also attended the ceremony, where excitement was palpable among residents. Many hailed the project as a long-awaited breakthrough for the region.
