Patna: A tragic incident unfolded in Bihar’s capital region on Friday evening when four members of a family were struck by the Vande Bharat Express, leaving three dead and one seriously injured. The accident occurred near Pandarak station in Mekra Mamrakha village, under the Barh subdivision of Patna district.
According to sources, the victims were on their way to attend a Tilak ceremony at a relative’s home when they attempted to cross the tracks around 5 p.m. All hailed from Tadapar village in Nalanda district.
The deceased were identified as Jitu Manjhi, 24, son of Ravindra Manjhi; Nagu Manjhi, 25, son of Jawahar Manjhi; and Ritlal Manjhi, 60, son of the late Saudagar Manjhi. The fourth victim, Jaglal Manjhi, 50, also the son of the late Saudagar Manjhi, survived the collision but sustained grievous injuries. His arms and legs were severed, and he was rushed to Patna Medical College Hospital (PMCH) after initial treatment at a local facility.
Witnesses described the impact as devastating, with the victims’ bodies badly mutilated. Locals immediately informed the railway police, who reached the site, secured the area, and sent the bodies to Barh sub-divisional hospital for post-mortem examinations.
Navneet Rai, station head of Pandarak police, confirmed the incident. “As soon as we received information about the accident, we reached the spot. The bodies have been taken into custody and sent for post-mortem. The matter is being investigated,” he said.
Authorities are probing how the family came to be on the tracks as the high-speed train approached. The accident has cast a shadow over the celebrations the family had been travelling to attend.
