Patna: Bihar is set for a dramatic shift in weather as a low-pressure system forms in the eastern Bay of Bengal, raising concerns over heavy rainfall that could disrupt Navratri and Durga Puja celebrations. The state’s meteorological department has issued warnings of active weather from the night of September 25, with showers expected to continue until October 2.
Patna and surrounding areas have already felt the impact. Recent heavy rain offered relief from lingering humidity but caused waterlogging across several streets. According to the Bihar Meteorological Centre, if the system near the Myanmar-Bangladesh coast intensifies, northern and eastern districts of Bihar could experience significant rainfall.
“The period from September 25 to 27 is likely to see heavy rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds,” a department official said. Temperatures are also expected to fluctuate, with maximum and minimum readings potentially dropping by up to three degrees Celsius, bringing cooler mornings and evenings.
While northern and eastern districts—including Jamui, Banka, Katihar, Kishanganj, Purnia, and Bhagalpur—face the highest risk of intense showers, southern regions such as Magadh may see only light to moderate rain. Patna is expected to experience scattered showers and cloudy skies over the coming days.
Data from recent rainfall highlights the variability: Singheshwar in Madhupura recorded 62.4 mm, Manpur in Gaya 5 mm, and Barari in Katihar just 1.2 mm. Meteorologists have attributed the extended monsoon presence to a delayed withdrawal this year, increasing the likelihood of rain during late September.
Authorities have advised residents to remain vigilant amid gusty winds and lightning, particularly during festive events, as the unpredictable weather poses risks to public safety.
