Patna: AIIMS Patna observed World Trauma Day on Friday with a focus on road safety, underlining the theme “Helmet is a Must for Every Two-Wheeler Rider.” The hospital organised a helmet distribution ceremony aimed at raising awareness about the life-saving importance of protective gear for two-wheeler riders.
Five trauma survivors admitted to AIIMS Patna were selected through a lucky draw to receive helmets, symbolising the collective responsibility of road safety. The draw was conducted by a child, adding a poignant touch to the event. The survivors’ relatives accepted the helmets from hospital dignitaries, including Prof. (Brig) Dr. Raju Agarwal, Executive Director; Prof. (Dr.) Anup Kumar, Medical Superintendent; and Dr. Anil Kumar, Professor & Head of the Department of Trauma Surgery and Critical Care.
The recipients included Mr. Aman and Sanjay from Aara, Devanshu from Nalanda, Akshay from Jehanabad – all victims of road traffic accidents – and Virendra Das from Motihari, who had an alleged history of assault. The survivors and their families expressed gratitude and pledged to spread awareness about helmet safety in their communities.
Dr. Anil Kumar urged attendees to promote responsible driving, stating: “Please follow traffic rules and always wear a helmet before riding a two-wheeler. Each of us can become an ambassador for road safety.”
Prof. Agarwal emphasised the life-saving potential of helmets, adding that simple safety measures could significantly reduce trauma-related deaths and injuries. “By wearing helmets, we can prevent serious head injuries and save lives. It is crucial to convey this message widely,” he said.
Prof. (Dr.) Anup Kumar highlighted the importance of comprehensive road safety practices beyond helmets, advising drivers to wear seatbelts in four-wheelers and to ensure helmets meet approved safety standards. He warned against using decorative or substandard helmets, which cannot effectively prevent severe injuries.
The event was attended by faculty members Dr. Rekha Kumari, Dr. Saket Prakash, Dr. Abhishek, and Dr. Shashi Kant, along with trauma survivors and their families. The ceremony concluded with a collective pledge to promote road safety and prevent trauma through awareness and responsible behaviour on the roads.
