Patna: Bihar’s 2025 Assembly elections saw a surprising new entrant on Friday, as celebrated singer Maithili Thakur filed her nomination from the Alinagar constituency under the banner of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The nomination and blessing ceremony was held in Benipur, with Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai in attendance.
Addressing the gathering, Rai drew attention to the competition among NDA candidates, noting the widespread admiration for Thakur since she joined the party. “Bihar is searching for Maithili,” he said, recounting how party workers have asked for her presence, even briefly, on their constituencies. “Some said, ‘If you don’t have time, come and stand on our land. That will get the job done.’” Rai emphasised that the development achieved in Alinagar has been driven by the NDA government under Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, and he urged support for Thakur as part of the broader vision of a developed Bihar.
Maithili Thakur, born on July 25,2000 in Benipatti village, Madhubani district, is renowned for her classical and folk singing. She began performing at a young age, participating in reality shows such as Little Champs and Rising Star. Her musical lineage includes her father, Ramesh Thakur, and her brothers, Rishabh and Ayachi Thakur, who are also singers.
Educated at Bal Bhavan International School in Delhi and currently pursuing graduation at Atmaram Sanatan Dharma College, Thakur has received several accolades, including the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar and the National Creators Award. She also serves as the brand ambassador for the State Khadi Village Industries Board, appointed by the Bihar government.
Her entry into politics marks a new chapter for the 25-year-old singer, who is leveraging her public profile and social work to contest in Alinagar.
